	A surge or spike is a sharp increase in voltage of short duration. These power-quality phenomena are among the most likely to cause damage. Lightning: Even where no obvious damage has occurred, the life of electronic equipment can be significantly reduced following a lightning surge. Failure of equipment may not happen immediately.
The Micro Processor Based Phone models have secondary lightning protection consisting of Polyswitches and Sidactors that provide surge protection. The two electronic boards are connected to a ground standoff to channel the direction of the surge away from the components.
	Enclosure must have electrical ground, preferably within 20 feet and the use of a gas discharge type lightning arrestor is recommended. The response time should be 1ns or less.
If additional surge protection is needed, we offer an external Surge Arrestor, Pt 800-1018. It is important that grounding was completed upon installation of phones in order for the additional surge protection to be effective.
